Introduction

Nicaragua, the land of lakes and volcanoes, is a vibrant Central American gem that often surprises travelers with its raw beauty and rich culture. Located between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, this diverse country offers colonial cities, untouched nature, and thrilling outdoor adventures. For Filipino travelers, entry to Nicaragua requires a valid passport, yellow fever vaccine card, and a US visa.

During our January 2025 adventure, we explored two of Nicaragua's most captivating cities: Leon and Granada. From volcano boarding down Cerro Negro to cruising Lake Cocibolca, Nicaragua quickly became one of the most unforgettable chapters in our Central American journey.

About Leon

Leon is Nicaragua's historical and intellectual heart. Known for its colonial architecture, revolutionary past, and youthful energy, this city offers an authentic Nicaraguan experience with fewer crowds than its more touristy neighbor, Granada.

Our Stay:

We stayed at Hotel La Recoleccion, a charming hotel nestled near the city's iconic cathedral. The hotel offered cozy rooms, a peaceful courtyard, and easy access to Leon's main attractions.

Things to Do:

Many of these activities were arranged through trusted local tour partners recommended by the tour operator we contracted with, ensuring a seamless and safe experience.

  1. DIY Walking Tour of Leon: We started from the bustling Central Park, soaking in the local vibe, admiring the Cathedral of Leon, and exploring surrounding streets. Along the way, we indulged in traditional Nicaraguan street food and picked up handmade souvenirs.

  2. Cerro Negro Volcano Boarding: One of Nicaragua's most thrilling adventures, volcano boarding down Cerro Negro is an absolute must. We joined a tour arranged by Intrepid Travel's trusted partner, hiked up the black volcanic slopes, and slid down the ash-covered surface—an adrenaline rush like no other.

  3. Explore the Revolutionary Murals: Leon's walls tell stories of its revolutionary history. Take time to wander the streets and admire these powerful murals that honor the country's fight for freedom.

  4. Visit the Museum of Legends and Traditions: Housed in a former prison, this quirky museum features eerie yet fascinating exhibits of Nicaraguan folklore, myths, and legends.

  5. Climb the Cathedral's Rooftop: For stunning panoramic views of Leon and the surrounding volcanoes, climb the iconic white rooftop of the Cathedral of Leon—perfect for sunset photos.

  6. Indulge in Local Cuisine at a Comedor: Small, family-run eateries called "comedores" serve delicious and affordable Nicaraguan dishes like gallo pinto and vigorón—a great way to dine like a local.

Useful Tips:

  • Local Currency: Nicaraguan Córdoba (C$), approx. 36 Córdoba = 1 USD

  • Bring lightweight clothes—Leon can get hot!

  • Volcano boarding requires some physical effort; wear sturdy shoes.

About Granada

Granada is one of Central America's oldest colonial cities, brimming with colorful facades, historic churches, and a laid-back atmosphere. Nearby, the volcanic crater lake of Apoyo offers a refreshing escape.
